Petition to Repeal the Restaurant/Bar Smoking Ban
A group of bar owners led by Betty Hamilton of the Tiger Club and Becky Reynolds of Cody's have launched a petition to repeal the recent changes to the Columbia Smoking Ordinance which banned smoking in all restaurants and bars.
When the petition receives enough qualified signatures, the city council must vote on the proposed changes to the smoking ordinance. If they decline to pass the ordinance, it automatically goes to a citywide vote during the next city election.
2276 qualified signatures from registered Columbia voters are required. Since many petition signatures get disqualified, over 3000 signatures will be needed to make sure there are enough. The goal is to obtain these and turn in the petitions by March 31.

If you wish to collect signatures to repeal the ban, please feel free to print out a copy of the petition and return it to Betty Hamilton at the Tiger Club, 1116 Business Loop 70 E.
Those who sign the petition must be registered voters in the City of Columbia.
Those gathering signatures on the petition must adhere to the following requirements from the City Charter for the signatures to be valid:
Section 129. Petitions. All petition papers comprising an initiative or referendum petition shall be assembled and filed with the City Clerk as one instrument. Every petition paper shall contain the full text of the measure proposed or referred, but the signatures to the petition need not all be appended to one paper. Each signer, after the signer's name, shall designate the signer's residence by street and number, or other description sufficient to identify the signer's place of residence, and the circulator of each such paper shall make oath before an officer competent to administer oaths that the circulator believes each signature appended to the petition to be the genuine signature of the person whose name it purports to be, that the circulator believes each such signer to be a legal voter, and that all signatures were affixed in the presence of the circulator.
